Question by simply me: Is it copyright infringement to adapt a children’s book into a stage play/skit for a school activity?
I thought it was considered copyright infringement only if we make money.

Yes, it is copyright infringement, whether you make money or not.
Check the date, though – if it’s a book in “public domain”, the copyright term has expired, and you are free to use it. With one or two exceptions, anything written before 1927 is fair to use.

There are also some exceptions for “educational use”… if you’re doing this in class, you may be okay – but not if you’re putting on a show for an outside audience, paying or not.
